Have you thought of a build scenario vs buy or partner? Microsoft has done a lot of AI work and has extensive data, especially in the "productivity/collaboration" fields?
I am quite sure the 'build versus buy' debate is (or was) raging fiercely inside the company. According to LinkedIn, OpenAI only has ~450 employees. Microsoft has a lot more working on AI, and there is quite some talent there. But once OpenAI finishes releasing their API, they could well achieve platform escape velocity. If Microsoft builds OpenAI into their crown jewels, that will pretty much cement a leadership position for OpenAI (particularly given the increased access to data, etc. that would entail). What I don't know is how 'close' Microsoft is internally to having something competitive. By virtue of their public announcements, I'm going to guess not very close.
